Alignment

While alignment is generally thought of in terms of vertical and horizontal, this sample breaks that rule. Even though at first look it may appear out of alignment, the images are aligned along a trailing vine in the background. The ogee curve of the vine creates the alignment. The advertisement complies with the alignment standards by using images and text blocks that are of a consistent size. The text in each block is flush left creating a strong edge. The main body of text in the lower right is justified and has no noticeable gaps. According to the text, “Nothing should be placed on the page arbitrarily. Every item should have a visual connection with something else on the page” (Williams, 2008). This Whirlpool advertisement taken from Remodeling magazine’s February issue demonstrates several of the rules of alignment. The most important example is that of breaking the rules. Once again, to quote Robin Williams “…you must know what the rule is before you can break it.”
